½ of ½ is ¼, which is smaller than ⅓.

¼ is the same as 3/12 and ⅓ is the same as 4/12, so, since 4 of something (twelfths) is bigger than 3 of the same thing,  ⅓ is bigger than ¼.

Elvie ate ⅓ of the pizza so that’s more than Emmie ate.
