I didn't understand your question completely, but from what I understood here is your solution:

x^2-x-2=0

By splitting the middle term

x^2 - 2x + x -2 =0

x(x-2) +1(x-2) =0

Taking (x-2) common,

(x-2)(x+1)=0

So, either x = 2 or x = -1
