Not a mathematical question.

The barbiturates are a class of drug affecting the CNS (central nervous system), a depressant which used to be used extensively in the 1960s and 1970s to treat anxiety, depression and insomnia, but could in some cases cause death. These drugs have now been superseded by safer CNS drugs.

From my limited knowledge and googling, I guess it is not a math term.

What are barbiturates?

Barbiturates are central nervous depressants. They reduce the activity of nerves causing muscle relaxation. They can reduce heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure. All barbiturates affect gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter (chemical) that nerves use to communicate with one another.
