5x-8y=-17, 3x=5+y, so y=3x-5, substitute for y in the first equation:

5x-8(3x-5)=-17,

5x-24x+40=-17,

-19x=-17-40=-57,

19x=57, x=57/19=3.

So y=3x-5=9-5=4.

Answer: x=3, y=4.
