= 59 + 1/12 - (57 + 5/9)

 

First we need to put it all over a common denominator ( denominator = number on the bottom of the fraction)

 

59 + 1/12 - 57 - 5/9

= (59x12) + 1/12 - ( (57x9)/9 + 5/9)

= (708 + 1)/12 - ( (513 + 5)/9)

= 709/12 - 518/9

 

= (709x3)/(12x3) - (518x4)/(9x4)

= 2127/36 - 2072/36

= (2127 - 2072)/36

= 55/36                                       This is the final answer. smiley
