-24½+10⅔ is the same as -(24½-10⅔) so we take the smaller number from the larger number and then put minus in front of the result.

Split the mixed numbers into whole numbers and fractions.

Subtract the whole numbers first: 24-10=14.

Now the fractions: ½-⅔. To do this, first we need to convert these fractions so that they have a common denominator. Both denominators divide into 6, so:

½=3/6 and ⅓=2/6, so ⅔=2×2/6=4/6.

Therefore,

½-⅔=3/6-4/6, but 3 is smaller than 4, so we need to borrow from the whole numbers. If we borrow 1 we need to reduce 14 by 1=13. 1 is six sixths=6/6, so we can make 3/6 bigger by 6/6, making 9/6. Now we’re subtracting 4 from 9=5, so we have ⅚, because 6/6+3/6-4/6=5/6.

Add back the whole number part and we get 13⅚. But we have to remember to put in the minus sign: -13⅚.

-24½+10⅔=-13⅚.
