Please help! I don't understand scale factors and my math teacher explained it like 

(When scaling a length   - multiply by k)
(When scaling an area    - multiply by k2)
(When scaling a volume  - multiply by k3)

Scaling up, 8 ft is 8*5=40 ft when scaled up.

Scaling down, 8 ft is 8/5=1.6 ft when scaled down.
