Add together ⅝ and ⅗ by expressing them with the same denominator. 8 and 5 both go into 40 so the denominator we need is 40. ⅛=5/40 and so ⅝ is 25/40, and ⅕=8/40 so ⅗=24/40. Add together 25/40 and 24/40=49/40, which is bigger than 1–it’s 1⁹⁄₄₀. Now we add the whole number part of the first number, 2, to this and we get 3⁹⁄₄₀.
