This is the same as ½-⅓ because the plus outside the parentheses and the minus inside combine to make minus. Both fractions can be expressed in terms of ⅙. ½ is 3 sixths and ⅓ is 2 sixths, so the difference is 3-2= 1 (one) sixth or ⅙.
