First divide £56 by 9. This does not give an exact number of pounds and pence. The closest is £6.22. But we need to add a couple more decimal places because we are going to multiply by 5 and 4. So we choose £6.2222. We are going to calculate 5/9 and 4/9 of £56.

Multiply by 5 and round to the nearest pence: £31.11 and now multiply by 4: £24.89.

So the split into 5:4 gives £31.11 and £24.89.
