The population of a city is 2500.if the number of males is 240 more than the number of females, how many makes and females are there in the city?

Let M be the number of males

Let F be the number of females.

F + M = 2500         (The population of a city is 2500)

M = F + 240           (the number of males is 240 more than the number of females)

Substituting for M = F + 240 into the 1st equation,

F + (F + 240) = 2500

2F = 2500 - 240

2F = 2260

F = 1130

M = F + 240

M = 1370
