Leave the brackets till last.

Subtract 10 from each side: 8(¾y-¼)=16

Now we have a choice about how to continue (1 or 2 below):

1. Divide by 8: ¾y-¼=2. Now multiply by 4: 3y-1=8, 3y=9, y=3; or

2. Use the distributive property to multiply 8 by each term in the brackets: 6y-2=16; 6y=18, y=3.
