I guess you meant 2 5/8 miles not 2 5/7 miles.

Add together the distances by adding the whole numbers first: 5+2=7.

Now add the fractions: 3 eighths and 5 eighths making 8 eighths, which is 1 mile. Add this to the 7 already calculated to get 8 miles. So they met their goal.
