A piece of wood is 1 7/15 inches thick. A layer of padding 13/15 inch thick is placed on the top. What is the total thickness of the wood and the padding?

Add the two dimensions together.

Add the fractions together first.

7/15 + 13/15 = (7 + 13)/15 = 20/15 = 4/3 = 1 1/3

Now add on the 1 inch from the dimension of the piece of wood

1 7/15 + 13/15 = 1 + (7/15 + 13/15) = 1 + 1 1/3 = 2 1/3

Answer: total thickness = 2 1/3 inches
