5x + 3y = 8
y = −2x + 1

Step 1 substitute Y

5x + 3 (-2x + 1) = 8

Step 2 Distribute

5x - 6x + 3 = 8  

Step 3 combine like terms  

-1x + 3 = 8

Step 4 Subtract 3 from both sides

-x = 5

Step 5 divide by -1

X = -5
