(x-3)^3/(x^2-1)=(x-3)^3/((x-1)(x+1)) doesn't simplify any further because there are no common factors.

But (x-3)^3 expands to x^3-9x+27x-27 and x^2-1 divides into it with a remainder:

Quotient is x-9+4(7x-9)/(x^2-1).
