199 * .40 = 79.60 - 5 = 74.50 *1.04 = $77.48

Did your teacher teach you tax was assigned after the discounts or before?  The above answer is after the discounts...

199 *1.04 = 206.96 * .40 = 82.78 - 5 = $77.78

This is before discounts...
