Find two numbers with aTotal of 500 and a difference of 156

Let the two numbers be X and Y, then

X + Y = 500 --- two numbers with a sum of 500

X - Y = 156   ---   two numbers with a difference of 156

now add the two equations

2X = 656

X = 328

Y = 500 - 328 = 172

The two numbers are: 172 and 328
