(3x^3 + 10x-1)-(5x^2+10x-9)

Eliminate the parentheses..remember everything in the second set is multiplied by -1 (due to the subtraction)

3x^3 + 10 x - 1 - 5x^2 - 10x + 9

You are adding 10x and subtracting 10x, so that disappears.

3x^3 - 5x^2 + 8
