Improper fractions can be converted to mixed numbers by dividing the bottom into the top and noting the remainder. 13 divided by 8 is 1 and 5 over. But 5 what? 5/8. So the mixed number is 1 5/8. 10/8 is similarly 1 and 2 over or 1 2/8. But we can go further, because 2 goes into 8 exactly 4 times so it "cancels down" into 1/4, so the answer is 1 1/4. Another way is to take 10/8 and cancel it down by dividing top and bottom by 2 to give 5/4. 4 goes into 5 once remainder 1, so we have 1 1/4.
