I bet it's all those negatives putting you off! Add 20 and 4x+6x to each side of the equation: 4x+6x=20. Hey presto! They've all gone. So we have 10x=20, therefore, dividing through by 10, x=2. Solved!

Given: -20=-4x-6x   Since all the signs in this equation are negative, change the
signs to positive to make the solution a little easier to deal with and obvious.

Use the fact: The product of two like signs makes a positive sign, and the product
of two unlike signs makes a negative sign.

Thus, we first multiply both sides by -1 to change negative signs to positive ones:

(-1)·(-20)=(-1)·(-4x-6x), so we have: 20=4x+6x   That is: 20=10x

Swap sides: 10x=20

Divide both sides by 10 to get x by itself.   we have: x=2

CK: Plug x=2 into the right side of equation given: -4(2)-6(2)=-8-12=-20
so LHS=RHS   CKD.

The answer is: x=2
