In words the question is: what is five sixths plus three sixths? If I ask you: what is five apples plus three apples you'd answer: eight apples. So 5/6 + 3/6 is 8/6. But 8 and 6 have a common factor 2, 4*2/3*2. 2/2=1 so we're left with 4/3. If you want to, you can divide 3 into 4 to give you 1 and 1/3.
