Always work on the brackets first, so 8 plus 5=13; then the 3 just outside means multiply this result by 3: 3*13=39. Finally, subtract 4 from this result: 39-4=35.

first calculate 8+5

Now you have 3(13)-4

Which is 39-4

=35
