If we write a=i+2j-5k and b=i-6j+15k, where i, j and k are Cartesian unit vectors, then 3a=3i+6j-15k. When we calculate 3a+b, we get 4i because the other parts cancel out. Therefore the vector 3a+b has a length of 4.
