Collect numbers on one side of the equation and variables (and multiples of variables) on the other side. That means moving things across the equals sign. Equals changes plus to minus and minus to plus when a transfer takes place from side to the other. So if we transfer all x's to left we get 5x-3x+9x. That is 14x-3x=11x. Now if we move all the numbers to the right we get 17+12-7=29-7=22. So the equation is 11x=22. Divide both sides by 11 and we get the answer x=2.
