4 divided by 457 is an unusual question, because it involves long division and the answer will be a fraction in decimal form. Set out the division by writing the dividend as 4.000... As many zeroes as you like. How far you take the result (the quotient) is not specified but we will go for three significant figures. Clearly 457 won't go into 4, 40 or 400, but it will go into 4000. To help you do the division prepare a times table for 457: 1*457=457; 2*457=914; 3*457=1371; 4*457=1828; 5*457=2285; 6*457=2742; 7*457=3199; 8*457=3656; 9*457=4113. So we write the nearest multiple of 457 under 4.000 and write in the quotient 0.008, so that the 8 lines up with the third zero of 4.000 and the number 3656 lines up underneath. The leading zeroes in the quotient ensure we start at the correct decimal place. Subtract 3656 from 4000 and we get 344. Bring down the next zero to make it 3440. The nearest multiple is 3199 which is 7 times 457, so we write 7 next to the 8 in the quotient making it read 0.0087. Subtract 3199 from 3440 to get 241. Bring down the next zero to make this remainder 2410, and carry on as we did earlier looking for the nearest multiple (which happens to be 5 times 457=2285). You should get the answer 0.00875 (three significant figures).
