how do you solve the following equation: y=3x + 5, y=2x - 2
I know the answer is -7, -16 but how do you perform the equation?  Thank you

Because both equations already equal y, set the equations equal to each other.

3x + 5 = 2x - 2
3x + 5 - 2x = 2x - 2 - 2x
x + 5 = -2
x + 5 - 5 = -2 - 5
x = -7

Now, use that in either equation to solve for y.

y = 2x - 2
y = 2(-7) - 2
y = -14 - 2
y = -16
