let x be amount borrowed from one bank, then 5000 - x is the amount borrowed from the other

.07(x) + .085(5000 - x) = 380

.07x + 425 - .085x = 380

-.015x + 425 = 380

-.015x = -45

x = 3000

so $3000 to one bank (7%) and 2000 to the other bank (8.5%)
