If f(x)=12, (x-4)^2=12. Taking square roots of each side of the equation we have x-4=sqrt(12), which is the same as sqrt(4*3). We know sqrt(4)=2, so this boils down to 2*sqrt(3)=3.4641 approx. So x=4+3.4641=7.4641.
