9x2-5x+7 doesn't factorise into real factors because 52<4×7×9, i.e., 25<252.

If the quadratic had been written 9x2-5x+a where a is a constant then 25-36a≥0, a≤25/36 for real factors.

For example, if a=-4, 9x2-5x-4=(9x+4)(x-1).
