you have to find the common denominator the you subtract.

12 1/4 - 5 2/3

1. Simplify the whole number functions by multiplying the denominator by the whole number and adding with the numerator.

4*12+1=49 and 3*5+2=17

2. make the answer above the numerator over the same denominator for each;

49/4 - 17/3

3. Since the denominators are not the same or have a constant multiplier, you cross multiple the denominators and the numerators;

3*49 = 147  and  4*17 = 68

and also multiply the denominators; 4*3 = 12

Now make 12 the denominator for both,

147/12 - 68/12

Since you have the same denominator, go ahead and subtract the numerator;

147 - 68 = 79

Now you answer is 79/12.
