One factor needed to write the equation is the fuel consumption rate, expressed in kilometres per litre. We'll call it F. To drive d km will require d/F litres of fuel. If F were 50 km/l and d=25 km, for example, we would need 25/50=0.5 litres of fuel. So the formula is V=45-d/F. (The tank will be empty when d/F=45, or d=45F. If F=50, then a full tank would take the car 50*45=2,250 km.)
