Question: 4 (2p + 3) = 16 p=?

The line above, 4 (2p + 3) = 16 p=?, means

1) solve the equation, 4 (2p + 3) = 16, for the unknown p.

or,

2) given 4 (2p + 3) = 16, find p.

We have,

4 (2p + 3) = 16   -- divide both sides by 4

(2p + 3) = 4    ----- subtract 3 from both sides

2p = 1    ------------ divide both sides by 2

p = 1/2

Answer: p = 1/2
