Solve [4X]+10=26 .

[4X]+10=26    --- subtract 10 from each side.

[4X] = 16   ------- divide both sides by 4.

[X] = 4

Now, the square brackets, [ ], are the absolute function, which means that they take the absolute, or positive, value of whatever is inside them.

Since X can be either positive or negative, and [X] is always positive, then

 The two solutions are: X = 4, X = -4
