1/2x+1/3y=5  ----- (1)

1/4x+y=10  -------- (2)

From (2), y = 10 - (1/4)x. Sibstitute for this into (1), to give

(1/2)x + (1/3)(10 - (1/4)x) = 5

(1/2)x + 10/3 - (1/12)x = 5

(1/2 - 1/12)x = 15/3 - 10/3

(5/12)x = 5/3

x = (5/3)(12/5) = 4

x = 4

y = 10 - (1/4)x = 10 - 1

y = 9
