The original price of the appliance is x.  If the discounted rate is 1000 then we can say that

1x-20%x=1000

Then we solve for x

Let's convert the 20% to a decimal by moving the decimal point over two spaces to the left and getting rid of the % sign

1x-.20x=1000

.80x=1000

divide by .80

x=1250
