5p + 3s = 23

5p + 1s = 20

Subtract the bottom equation from the top equation and we get:

0p + 2s = 3

s = 1.5

Plug that value back into one of the equations above:

5p + 1(1.5) = 20

5p + 1.5 = 20

5p = 18.5

p = 3.7

A hockey puck costs $3.70.
