there are 16oz in 1 pound.  If we want pounds we need to get oz to cancel so we set the problem up like this

39oz          1lb

-------- x   ---------

    1           16oz

 

the oz units cancel and we can multiply to get 39/16lbs or 2.437lbs
by
16 oz = 1 lb or, 1 oz= lb or, 39 oz= lb= 2.4375 lb
