x^2 + 2x = 4

Add the square of one-half the co-efficient of x.

x^2 + 2x + 1 = 4 + 1
(x + 1)^2 = 5
x + 1 = sqrt 5
x + 1 = 2.236   and   x + 1 = -2.236
x = 2.236 - 1   and   x = -2.236 - 1
x = 1.236        and   x = -3.236
