Solving word problems when there are fractions involved.

Please explain how to come up with this answer:

 

1/2 of the class went bowling.  1/3 of the class went for pizza.  The 3 remaining people went to a movie.  How many people were in the class altogether?

(x/3) + (x/2)+3=x

2x+3x+18=6x

-x=-18

x=18

x/3...6,  x/2=9, +3=18
