Can someone give step by step directions on how to solve a quadratic equation using the quadratic formula. I don't understand how it works. Here is my example:

x^2 - 2x - 2 = 0

Please help me solving it using the quadratic formula and not by fractoring. Thanks.

x^2-2x-2=0
by using the qudratic formula,
x=(-(-2)+sqrt((-2)^2-4(1)(-2)))/2(1) or (-(-2)-sqrt((-2)^2-4(1)(-2)))/2(1)
=(2+sqrt(4+8))/2 or (2-sqrt(4+8)/2
=1+sqrt(3) or 1-2sqrt(3)

x^2 - 2x - 2 = 0

x^2 - 2x +1-1- 2 = 0

(x-1)^2-3=0

(x-1)^2=3

x-1=±√3

x=±√3+1
