Let's figure out what we know so we can solve for what we don't know. We are looking the area which equals the length times the width.

Let's say that since we don't know the length or the width that

y = length

and

x = Width

so the area is x times y

and we also know that the length (y) is 13 feet longer than the width (x) we can write this as

x+13=y

Let's call the area a

since we know that x+13=y we can solve this by substituting that for x+13 in for y

a=x(x+13)

area=x^2+13x

The length of a rectangular backyard is 13 feet longer than its width(x) .

So,  Length  =13+x and Width =x

Area of the backyard= Length ×  Width = (13+x)x

 =13x + x2 , Ans
