x^2 - 4x + 12 = 0

There's a -4 on the x in the middle.  Half of -4 is -2.  -2 squared is 4.

x^2 - 4x + 4 - 4 + 12 = 0

x^2 - 4x + 4 + 8 = 0

x^2 - 4x + 4 = -8

(x - 2)^2 = -8

You can't square something and get a negative result.

No solution.
