The answer is 56

I can't believe the variety of answers to this question. Including 81, which I've yet to see someone actually offer the math for.

People say that it depends on what "valid" variable you us, or that you have to assume this or that in the "missing" pattern, but you really don't.

The simple formula for this is x^2+x=y or if you want, x*x+x=y.

You don't even have to calculate the "missing" numbers.

9*9+9 = 81+9 = 90. So y=90.

The answer is:90

I got 56!

6 x 1 = 6 +6 = 12 (the next answer)

12 x 1 = 12 + 8 = 20 (the next answer)

20 x 1 = 20 + 10 = 30 (the next answer)

30 x 1 = 30 + 12 = 42 (the next answer)

42 x 1 = 42 + 14 = 56!!!!

If the multiplier is the unknown variable the pattern revealed below is possible by adding 1 to the multiplier. 9 would be 90

2x3 = 6

3x4= 12

4x5 = 20

5x6 = 30

6x7 = 42

7x8 = 56

8x9 = 72

9x10 = 90
by
The answer is 9 = 60
by
2 = 6  2x3 =6

3 = 12 3x4 =12

4 = 20 4x5 = 20

5 = 30 5x6 = 30

6 = 42 6x7 = 42

7 = 49 7x8 = 56

8 = 64 8x9=72

9 = 90 9x10 = 90
by
60

pattern is 2x current number added to the previous answer

so

last number is 6 = 42 so

9 = (9x2) or 18 + 42

9 = 60
by

#include <stdio.h>

int main (int argc, const char * argv[]) {

    int n=0; int x=0;

    while( n++ < 20 )

    {

    x = n * ( n + 1 );
    printf("%i : %i \n", n, x);

    }
   return 0;
by
9 = 20,10 = 33,11 = 48,12 = 65,13 = 84
by
7=56 8=72 9=90
by

if 2 = 6, 3 =12, 4 = 20, 5 = 30, 6 = 42 then 9 = ?

6+3*2=12

12+4*2=20

20+5*2=30

30+6*2=42  then

42+9*2=60

by
2=6

3=12

4=20

5=30

6=42

7=49

8=58

9=67

Antwoord = 67
by
90

2x3=6 3x4=12 4x5=20 5x6=30 6x7=42 7x8=56 8x9=72 9x10=90
by
If 2 = 6,  ( 2 x 3 added to 6 = 12) hence  3 = 12: And 2 x 4 added to 12 = 20, hence 4 = 20,  And 2 x 5 added to 40 = 42, then 2 x 9 added to 42 = 60,

Therefore 9 = 60
by

if 2 = 6, 3 =12, 4 = 20, 5 = 30, 6 = 42 then 9 = ?

2=6(4)

3=12(6)

4=20(8)

5=30(10)

6=42(12)

7=56(14)

8=72(16)

9=90(18)

10=110(20)

9=90

by

if 2 = 6, 3 =12, 4 = 20, 5 = 30, 6 = 42 then 9 = ?

2=6(4)

3=12(6)

4=20(8)

5=30(10)

6=42(12)

7=56(14)

8=72(16)

9=90(18)

So I got "60" w a pattern of escalation by 2 each time. But my i see reasoning for "56" and "90".  So what is THE answer?
by
2*3 3*4 4*5 . . . .9*10=90
by
9=then 9
by
it can be solved with 2 methods. 1st method. 2x3=6 3x4=12 4x5=20 5x6=30 6x7=42 then 9x10=90 2nd method 2x2=4. 4+2=6 3x3=9. 9+3=12 4x4=16. 16+4=20 5x5=25. 25+5=30 6x6=36. 36+6=42 then 9x9=81. 81+9=90. So 90 is the Correct Answer.
by
the answer is 90
by
if 2 = 6, 3 =12, 4 = 20, 5 = 30, 6 = 42 then 9 = ? 2+1=3,2*3=6 3+1=4,3*4=12 and so on..... so 9+1=10,9*10=90;
by
Asnwer is 70.
by

6/2 =3

12/3 =4

20/4 =5

30/5 =6

42/6 =7

The answer keeps increasing by1.

So

x/9 =8

x =9*8

x =72

by

Para ser 90, a matriz precisava deixar claro que existe o 7 e 8.

Isto não ocorre. Acredito que o resultado mais provável seja 58, pois o resultado é sempre a soma dos números da esquerda , diagonal acima e superior + 1:

12 =( 6 + 3 + 2) + 1

20 =(12 + 4 + 3) + 1

30 = (20 + 5 + 4) + 1

42 = (30 + 6 + 5) + 1

?? = (42 + 6 + 9) + 1 = 58

by
6-4(3-5)2+30/5
by
if 2 = 6, 3 =12, 4 = 20, 5 = 30, 6 = 42 then 9 = ?

I think is: Number X Next position Number from the given variables.

2 = 6 , so 2x3=6

3 = 12, 3x4=12

4 = 20, 4x5 = 20

5 = 30, 5x6 = 30

6 = 42, 6x7 = 42

9  = 9x10 = 90
by
if 2 = 6, 3 =12, 4 = 20, 5 = 30, 6 = 42 then 9 = ? my answer?
by
9=90
by
8*9=72
by
9 x 8=72
by
9 = 56
by
This is easy..The answer is simply... 9

once you guys realize that this isn't really a math problem & that the whole equation is incorrect..Then you'll understand why...the answer is..... 9
by
2 = 6

3 = 12 (+ 6)

4 = 20 (+ 8)

5 = 30 (+ 10)

6 = 42 (+12)

7 = 66 (+14)

8 = 82 (+ 16)

9 = 100 (+ 18)

Each successive number is arrived at by adding a progressively larger number (larger by 2) to the result.

9. Or, if you're willing to accept the abuse of the equality sign in the proposition, continue the pattern "x=x*(x+1)" to get 90.
by

7 and 8 are not there ... use the numbers shown ..... add 2 numbers plus the previous total to get the next total 3+3+6=12 / 4+4+12=20 / 5+5+20=30 / 6+6+30=42 / 9+9+42=60

by

2x3=6

3x4=12

4x5=20

.............

9x10=90!!!

by Level 9 User (42.6k points)
The answer is 9
by
the answer is simple, the answer is there is no answer, because 2 does not equal 6 and 3 does not equal 12 and so on, true there is a patern but that's just there to trick you, but what if there wasn't a patern? most people would have got the answer because they gave up on what they learned at school or what they were taught
by
My answer is 72
by
posible answer is 72
by
30. Because 2=6=42.
by
9+(9*9)=90
by
2=2x3=6

3=3x4=12

4=4x5=20

...

9X10=90
by
answer is 56
by
Este problema no tiene solucion, o bien, no tiene una solucion unica.

Si se pretende seguir un razonamiento matematico a este problema, ya de partida las condiciones iniciales no lo son, por ejemplo, 2 no es igual a 6.

The answer is actually 90
by
56 because 7 x8 is 56
by
i think its 56
by
9 = 9
by
The answer is 56. I worked it out if 2=6   3=12    3x2 = 6 ....4x3=12....5x4=20...6x5=30....9x6=54
by
You have to think Algebra for some of those who say it's not a mathematical problem!

9=90

Think of it the way...

9y=90

Y=90

Adding 1 each time! Finishing the missing numbers instead of jumping from 6 to 9. It makes sense... 9y=90!
by

9=90

9y=90

Y=10

You must think alegebra for those of you who say it's not an answer!
by

Each answer after the first has 2 added to it. Looking at the pattern of answers, the final answer is 78.

by
x * (x+1) = y

9 * (9+1) = 90
by
I got 90 2•3=6 3•4=12 4•5=20 5•6=30 6•7=42 7•8=56 8•9=72 9•10=90
by
I'm not going through the math because several already have.  The correct answer is 90 because the numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 in the problem constitutes numbers in a sequence to infinity with the answer being where number 9 is within the sequence.  For the answer to be anything else, then 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 would have to all be random numbers, which they are not and there is nothing in the problem to indicate the numbers are random.
by

it is easy because 9 times 10 = 90 so answer = 90smiley

by
As written the answer is 56,
by
90. Because, 2 x 3 = 6 3 x 4 = 12 4 x 5= 20 5 x 6= 30 6 x 7= 42 9 x 10= 90

100. each number in the right hand column increases by 2 as it is added.
6+6=12
12+8=20
20+10=30
30+12=42
42+14=56 (not shown)
56+16=82 (not shown)
82+18=100
by
i got 90... What is the correct answer?
by
It's just a next in series question. It is written incorrectly.   You don't have to be a genius to answer it (correctly), but you do have to leave out assumptions.  I'm amazed at how hard so many people worked to get the answer wrong.  A perfect example of why the world is struggling today.  Taking a simple task, making it harder than it needs to be and then complicating yourself into the wrong answer.  -  Yes, I know I didn't provide it, because if I do, many will tell me how stupid I am based on their incorrect answer,  which in turn just supports my comment.
by
2=6,3=12,4=20,5=30,6=42,7=56,8=72 et 9=90
by
What makes me want to go 9x8 instead of 9x10? I must be dyslexic.
by
90 is the answer that I received.
by
2(*3)=6. 3*4=12 4*5=20 5*6=30 6*7=42 then 9*10 =90. The answer is 90
