6x+5y=-17 x=3-2y
solve by elimination

x = 3 - 2y
x + 2y = 3

6 * (x + 2y) = 6 * 3
6x + 12y = 18

  6x + 12y = 18
-(6x +  5y = -17)
-----------------------
        7y    = 35
y = 5

x = 3 - 2y
x = 3 - 2(5)
x = 3 - 10
x = -7

Use equation 1 to check your answer.

6x + 5y = -17
6(-7) + 5(5) = -17
-42 + 25 = -17
-17 = -17

x = -7 and y = 5
