We start with 100% of whatever we've got.  35% less than that is 100% - 35% = 65%

So the question is:

What is 65% of $68?

"what" means x

"is" means =

"%" means /100

"of" means *

x = 65/100 * 68

x = 44.2

Answer:  $68 with 35% taken away leaves $44.20.
