How do you solve y = 3x + 11 y = -2x + 1?
I don't understand substitution and I need help!

y = 3x + 11
y = -2x + 1

Start with one of the equations: the second.

y = -2x + 1

Now, from the first equation, get the value of y,
and substitute it for y in the second equation.

y = 3x + 11
y = -2x + 1
3x + 11 = -2x + 1

Solve for x.

3x + 11 = -2x + 1
3x + 2x = 1 - 11
5x = -10
x = -2

Choose one of the original equations and substitute
the value of x into the equation to solve for y.

y = 3x + 11
y = 3(-2) + 11
y = -6 + 11
y = 5

You should use the other equation you started with
to check your work.

y = -2x + 1
5 = -2(-2) + 1
5 = 4 + 1
5 = 5

Your answer: x = -2, y = 5
