x^2 -x -42=0

(x-7)(x+6)=0

y^2 + 7y - 6y - 42 = 0
(y^2 + 7y) - (6y + 42) = 0
y(y + 7) - 6(y + 7) = 0
(y + 7)(y - 6) = 0

y + 7 = 0
y = -7

y - 6 = 0
y = 6
