2(n + 1) + 1 = (n - 5) + (n - 2)
2n + 2 + 1 = n - 5 + n - 2 {used distributive property and took out parentheses}
2n + 3 = 2n - 7 {combined like terms}
3 = -7 {subtracted 2n from both sides}
= no solution

- when the variable disappears and you are left with a false statement,
such as 3 = -7, then there is no solution {there is no number that x can be}
