3(x+1)=12

x+1=4

x=3

3x+3=12 ,subtract the 3 from both sides

3x=9

x=3

3x-3 = 12

3x = 12-3

3x = 9

x = 9/3

x = 3

its 3 because it would be like these -  3(x+3)=12   x=1,- so replace the x with 1- (1+3=4) turns the question into these. 34 <----  that means multiple so 3X4=12 =D
